About

Creating an international and interdisciplinary collaboration between Chile and Sweden in the field of metasurfaces and radioastronomy.

Chile has significatively contributed to the development of radioastronomy due the ideal location for telescopes at high elevation in the Atacama desert, being the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) one of the most iconic examples. The electromagnetic waves analyzed in observatories like ALMA are received through antennas. These antennas send valuable information for scientists about our universe, using guiding and active microwave components. In fact, these microwave and antenna devices play an important role in the quality and the resolution of the information that we can capture.

In that perspective, radio astronomy is constantly evolving, always seeking tools and technologies that allow for more precise and detailed observation of the universe. In this context, this project emerges to explore the use of metasurfaces to resolve some of the challenges that nowadays radio astronomy receivers faces.

Challenges

Efficient reception of the electromagnetic waves from outer space

Spatial resolution of our antenna devices when pointing at different locations.

Spectral resolution to detect different molecules/atoms at every location of the space.

Efficient transmission between the antennas and
microwave components.

Elimination of undesired transmissions/interference from other locations, or from the Earth.
